Laser Engraver

Hi all!

The school I work for is looking at applying for grants for Maker equipment. I would like to use those funds for a laser engraver but I am in need of which one would be ideal. My main focus would be to cut plexiglass type materials for keyguards. I know ventilation is very important, so any advice on that as well would be great.

I have a laser from APLazer to cut keyguards, plywood and engrave. Great tech support when needed. Robust machine, a patented open architecture laser. Check it out. There are options to have a demo from area users depending on where you are located.

Great suggestion @jkauppil! :+1: :+1:

You’ll need a laser that can cut through 1/8" - 1/4" acrylic. Trotec recommends at least a 60 W CO2 laser ( You’ll also need a commercial fume extractor that can remove the VOCs. BOFA provided our local makerspace a quote on an AD1000IQ for an 80W CO2 laser( I’d recommend chatting with a local rep (Epilog, Trotec, BossLaser, etc).

If you haven’t already, you may also want to consider a 3d printer as well for 3d printed keyguards if that’s your main focus. @KenHackbarth has developed a nice set of tools to create these (
